The expanded rehabilitation unit at the Lake Road private hospital features 25 beds, a hydrotherapy pool, increased gym area and extended multipurpose area.

The first inpatients will move into the new-look unit today.

Port Macquarie Private Hospital chief executive officer Paul Geddes said the expanded and enhanced rehabilitation unit was nothing short of amazing and world class.

He said the quality of the building, the facilities and the team meant the hospital was future proofing rehabilitation services for many years to come.

"We will be so proud of this unit for many years to come," Mr Geddes said.

He said the hydrotherapy pool opened up a whole new world of rehabilitation services in the private sector and the private hospital looked forward to delivering that to the community.

The federal government provided $1.5 million towards the project and Ramsay Health Care funded the remainder.

Lyne MP Dr David Gillespie officially opened the unit on Friday.

Dr Gillespie said our area had a skewed elderly population compared with the rest of Australia.

"This rehabilitation facility will be put to great use," he said.

Dr Gillespie said Ramsay Health Care was to be congratulated on this project in expanding the standard and number of facilities available to patients here in Port Macquarie.

"The new facilities at the private hospital will complement and further improve the medical services available in our community," he said.

Port Macquarie Private Hospital rehabilitation unit director Dr Roslyn Avery said there was a great need and demand for rehabilitation services.

The expanded unit will pave the way for day programs and there are extra beds for inpatient care.

"Rehabilitation is about improving the optimum quality of life and reducing illness," Dr Avery said.

The expanded unit caters to a range of patients from people with head injuries to cardiac patients, people recovering from hip fractures, post-operative patients and stroke recovery.
