Organised by Fashioned 4 Freedom Mid North Coast, the Walk 4 Freedom was staged locally as a part of the global awareness campaign championed by A21, an organisation that helps spread the word about the impacts of sex slavery and human trafficking around the world.
Of the world's estimated 27 million slaves, more than 1.4 million are imprisoned as sex workers, many of them in brothels across Europe and Asia. There are stories of families who have sold their daughters to put food on their table, to the horrific drugging and abduction of women from coffee shops and night clubs by predatory men.
A21's mission is to rescue women and children from the clutches of slavery and bring offenders before the courts.
Ellie Fredrick, Fashioned 4 Freedom advocate and member of TriFreedom, a group of athletes who participated in the weekend's Ironman 70.3 event, said the walk was an important step forward in nurturing support for the campaign at a grassroots level.
"We had a great response from the community with cheers, claps and shouts of support with beeping horns from people passing by," Ms Fredrick said.
"Although we weren't expecting it we received random donations from observers as we walked. From those donations we raised about $200 which was great."
TriFreedom has raised more than $110,000 over three years for the A21 campaign.
