yesterday.
Magennis and Lewis teamed up with Central Coast athlete Matt Baker in the Good Guys
outfit.
The Port pairing have swept everything in their wake in the past couple of years.
A back-to-back NSW All Schools triathlon win has been a recent highlight of their short careers. Their good form continued yesterday.
Lewis handled the swim leg, Magennis cycled and Baker cooked up a good run leg in the heat of Port Macquarie’s spring.
The team was off to a good start immediately, with Lewis emerging from the water in first place.
By the time the teams got off the mark at about 7.30am, the tide had begun to hamper swimmers on the way out.
“It was easier coming back,” Lewis said.
“There were some fast times.”
It was hard for Lewis to nail down a target time in the water as the tide plays a different part every year.
“This is my third time doing it,” he said. “The first year I did it, it was 22 minutes, then the last time was 25.
“You can’t really have a goal time.”
Magennis lengthened the lead to about 10 minutes during the bike leg.
He said he went out too hard and “died a bit” towards the end of the 90 kilometres.
“It was pretty hot out there,” he said.
The second lap was particularly hard, with win hampering the field.
“[I was] suffering,” Magennis said.
He said it wasn’t a surprise when Lewis came out of the water in first place.
“I was expecting it,” Magennis said.
The run leg was Baker’s first half marathon.
“I didn’t really know what to expect,” he said.
“But I went alright. I was dreading the heat a little bit, and I definitely felt it.
“I was hoping it wasn’t going to get as hot as it did, because it was my first one and I didn’t want to blow up.
He was spent when he crossed the line at the finish.
“There was someone holding me up until I got here [to the food tent],” he said.
The pair wants to have another crack at the all schools title again this year.
“It’s our last year in that, so we want to defend our title,” Lewis said.
Jack Pilgrim will join the pair to run.
