The awards were part of the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Country Division's annual conference in Port Macquarie. The awards jury said "these awards are not given lightly, but in recognition of, and maintaining, a standard of outstanding architecture".
Designed by Port Macquarie architects Chris Jenkins Design, the owners call the Lighthouse Road house, Petalouda, which is Greek for butterfly, as the building form is essentially consists of two sweeping roofs which hover over a glass box.
The architect's brief required the house to maximise the ocean views and create a home which felt like a resort.
In its citation, the jury "found the conceptual format and planning arrangement of this generous and deliberately modern house to be well considered".
"Tucked against the southern and western boundaries, site issues of privacy and protection have been dealt with in a manner that allows internal spaces to open up to the outdoor areas, coastal views and northerly aspect.
"The client's requirement for light filled spaces and clean minimal finishes are clearly evident."
When receiving the award, practice creative director Chris Jenkins, praised the contribution of his studio and made special mention of the input of the builder Mark Bannister and his team whose outstanding workmanship realised the architect's design and his clients' dream.
