Two councillors, Justin Levido and Trevor Sargeant, stood for the position at Wednesday's Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting.
A show of hands resulted in a five to four vote in favour of Cr Levido.
Cr Levido feels the time is right, two years after the local government election, to take on the role.
"I'm enjoying my time on council," Cr Levido said.
"I have a view it is important that council do the best it can for the residents.
"I think it [being deputy mayor] will better assist me in achieving that result."
The position comes with an added workload as the deputy mayor is called on to step in when the mayor is unavailable.
Mayor Peter Besseling thanked Cr Roberts for his tenure as deputy mayor over the past 12 months and congratulated Cr Levido on his election.
Cr Sargeant and Cr Roberts have each completed 12 months as deputy mayor during this council term.
