Second-placed Port United takes on minor premier Wallis Lake in the decider at Regional Stadium in a dream match-up for spectators.
It’s how it should be: The two best sides all year fighting it out for premiership glory.
United will have to reverse the form from this season to triumph tomorrow. The Forster-based Lake side won both its encounters with the Green Bloods this season.
It was 3-2 on both occasions.
United is riding high after a win in last weekend’s preliminary final over Macleay Valley Rangers.
The match went down to the wire, with both teams taking 12 penalties in the shootout. It was 2-2 at the end of regular time. In the end, United triumphed 7-6.
United keeper Luke Jennings saved an amazing four penalties, and scored one of his own.
Coach Chris Walsh said last weekend was the first time he’d really been nervous ahead of a match this season, and tomorrow the nerves would probably kick in again.
“Everyone is pumped, but there will be a few butterflies floating around,” he said.
Confidence is another emotion plenty of the team’s players have. United has matched it with Lake this season, and Walsh said his men were unlucky to lose both contests 3-2.
Walsh plans to take advantage of a Lake back line which isn’t very mobile.
“There’s a bit of space down the wings,” he said.
“Ads [Woonton] and Liam [Clarke] will be looking to exploit that.”
They will target big Daniel McGovern in the middle of the park.
“He’s very strong off his head,” Walsh said of the United striker.
McGovern has scored an amazing 28 goals in 19 games this season.
“I’d say about 30 per cent of his goals have been off his head,” Walsh said.
