AN extra special day awaits the Hastings Valley Vikings on Saturday.
The club has a golden opportunity to claim an historic first grand final victory on the hallowed Oxley Oval turf.
If all goes well, the Vikings could even come away with two triumphs.
The club has reserve grade and first grade in action in the deciders.
Last year’s grand final loss is providing plenty of motivation to first grade coach Andrew Kable and his men this season.
“You don’t like to lose grand finals,” he said. “So of course it’s motivation for us.”
The key to winning come tomorrow is sticking to the game plan.
“If we get drawn away from our style, it can hurt us,” Kable said.
“We’ve really honed the way we play. I like to think we’re in a position where we can be pretty effective.”
The Pirates will be a stern test. They play for the whole 80 minutes, as they proved last season with a last-gasp try to seal victory.
“Pirates are a quality side,” Kable said.
The forwards are particularly dangerous.
“Their forward pack are a big danger,” Kable said. "They’re much bigger than we are.
“The Pirates are an 80 minute team and have plenty of experience.”
Pirates like Peter Sales are in ominous form, but Kable believes he has the side to take victory tomorrow.
Dan Willoughby is one Kable will look to. He’s going well after seeing his fair share of injuries at the start of the season.
“Dan Willoughby is in exceptional form at the moment,” Kable said.
“He always creates problems for opposition.”
“Tom Hetherington and Bernie Ryan always have big workloads.”
