A number of programs will be available for children to grab a board and hit the waves while they enjoy their time off from school.

The first of those is the annual indigenous surf day, to be held on Saturday September 20.

It is open for anyone aged from six to 17 years old and will be held at Flynns Beach.

Pre-registration is required by completing a Port Macquarie Surf School waiver form and returning it in an envelope with $10 to 46 Pacific Drive, Port Macquarie.

Registration must be completed and returned by Wednesday September 17.

Wayne Hudson from the Port Macquarie Surf School often looks forward to these events and said there was a demand for more to be held throughout the year.

"It's great to be able to do these programs," he said.

"The indigenous surf day one we have been doing for years and years. All the kids love it and we are even looking at doing some extra ones throughout the year."

It was so popular in the past that many children unfortunately missed out.

"It's normally pretty busy and last year we actually had kids on a waiting list because there were so many wanting to join in," he said.

"They just love it. Everyone's got different reasons why they surf.

"A lot think they can't do it but when they finally stand up and get a wave their faces light up.

"It's a big thrill for them and they all seem to have a great time, especially when we run these programs."

They are also looking at hosting the Surf for Life program in the holidays which is designed for disadvantaged children.
