WHO is the greatest caller of all time?
I suspect your answer will depend on your vintage but here in Australia we have been blessed with great callers across the codes.
Les Murray has become the voice of football in Australia and Gordon Bray has become synonymous with rugby battles.
Nobody comes close to Ray Warren although Darryl Eastlake’s Origin calls and Rex Mossop’s mix-ups are worthy of mention. I defer to those who grew up with Frank Hyde.
In AFL nothing beats a Bruce McAvaney-Dennis Commetti double on grand final day.
And probably the most famous caller of all-time goes to the man who coined “gold, gold, gold to Australia” – Norman May.
Richie Benaud is so important to summer that David Gyngell wants him to call the cricket from his loungeroom this summer. He’s equally famous for lining Billy Birmingham’s pockets as The 12th Man.
The SCG unveiled a media Hall of Honour this week and it gives you some appreciation of the great voices who have inspired tears, tantrums and terror as we watched our weekend warriors in action.
They are as much a part of our experience as the players, especially in rural areas where it is even more difficult to get to the game and view the action live.
We are giving away a book to one lucky reader through our website this week: all you have to do is go online and comment at portnews.com.au or our Facebook page on your favourite commentator of all time (in 50 words or less). We’ll announce the winner next week. The book is called “Unsung Sporting Heroes”.
