Magnussen has improved with every swim during his Commonwealth Games campaign and Mullens said his former protégé is showing signs of returning to his best form.
"He took a few hits during those Olympic Games," Mullens said. "It took a long time for him to get over it.
"But it looks like he's got that confidence back and he's looked good during his races.
"He looked relaxed and his back didn't look spotty which would suggest a lactic acid build up. I really think he's ready to go."
The Missile's biggest threat comes in the form of fellow Australian Cameron McEvoy.
Mullens said the race, held last night, has been pegged as one of the best in recent times between the two Australians.
"Well it's a race between the one and two ranked in the world, no matter what happens it's going to be an amazing race," he said. "They are the only two in the world that have swum under 48 seconds this year."
Mullens predicted Magnussen to take the gold medal in a time of 47.7.
Two other Hastings’ residents Shelley Watts ( boxing) and John Borg (bowls) will be in action during the Games.
