About 30 members attended a union meeting on Friday to discuss their concerns about staff numbers ahead of the opening of the $110 million Port Macquarie Base Hospital expansion.
The union estimates an extra 21 cleaners are needed to properly clean the expanded hospital.
Hospital management confirmed an extra six full-time equivalent cleaners were being recruited, and staffing numbers were in accordance with industry standards.
The HSU is also campaigning for a significant boost to the number of security, wardsmen and food services staff, along with operating theatre assistants.
Health Services Union organiser Michael Kearns said the union would seek a meeting with hospital management on August 25 to discuss its concerns.
He said the union welcomed additional funding, but it still had concerns that staff numbers would be inadequate for optimum care.
"Port Macquarie Base Hospital, while it is a workplace for our members, they are proud to be working in the facility and our primary focus is patient safety and care," he said.
Union representatives met with hospital management on Friday.
Hastings Macleay Clinical Network coordinator and Port Macquarie Base Hospital general manager Robert Pegram said the union had regularly met and consulted with representatives from the HSU throughout the expansion project.
"To date, an additional six full time equivalent cleaners are being recruited to assist in providing cleaning services to the new expansion," he said.
"Staffing numbers are calculated in accordance with industry standards.
"Port Macquarie Base Hospital is committed to maintaining the facility at the highest standard of cleanliness."
Union officials updated members about the latest meeting with management.
Members agreed to seek clarification about the number of operating theatres which will be commissioned when the hospital expansion opens.
