About 4pm a truck travelling east on the Oxley Highway near Mount Seaview swerved and hit the embankment, before crossing the road and crashing into the barrier.
The 28-year-old driver said a Wallaby had run onto the road, but when police arrived at 5pm they said his breath smelt of alcohol and eyes were glazed.
The driver of the 4.5 tonne vehicle said he consumed three or four beers at a Tamworth pub at lunch.
When he arrived at Wauchope Police Station at 6.20pm it was discovered his licence had been suspended that day.
The man was told court papers would be sent to him, relating to the licence suspension and driving under the influence.
His truck blocked the eastbound lane for a number of hours, and needed a crane and two tow trucks to remove it.
As police were guiding a prime-mover towing a trailer it hit a police car parked in the eastbound lane, 200 metres from the first truck.
The front driver's side wheel and bull bar of the police vehicle were damaged by the incident, but no one was hurt.
Traffic was restored to normal and the situation resolved by 7.55pm.
