Emergency services were called to the fire at Christmas Cove Caravan Park and Lifestyle Village about 6.10pm, after a resident heard an explosion from next door and saw flames licking at her window.
The woman rushed out of her cabin clutching some of her most valuable possessions. Her home was burnt to the ground.
Inspector Mick Aldridge said an off-duty ambulance officer was driving past and saw the flames. The paramedic called emergency services and police were first on the scene first to begin evacuations.
Firefighters arrived at 6.21pm and found two cabins at the park's south eastern corner were engulfed in flames.
About 20 firefighters including the hazardous materials unit were involved in battling the blaze.
"Our biggest concern was not only the ferocity of the fire, but the 90 kilogram gas cylinders located at the outside of each cabin," Inspector Aldridge said.
Laurieton Fire Brigade Captain Les King said the cylinders were venting gas when his personnel arrived.
"The two cylinders sounded like boiling kettles," Captain King said.
"That means they were just about to go."
Firefighters applied water to the outside of the cylinders until it was safe for them to be manually turned off.
Two Essential Energy technicians arrived at 7.40pm to turn off all power to the site.
Firefighters in masks with thermal equipment then moved through the wreckage, first removing the cylinders and searching for any other dangers.
Inspector Aldridge said that during the evacuation the only people not accounted for were the two previous occupants of the van where the fire is believed to have started. Those two people were asked to leave the caravan park on Friday.
Fire and Rescue NSW Commander Mark McGuire said the primary search indicated no one was hurt or injured.
Detectives were investigating the scene on Sunday morning.
The smoke hung over West Haven into the early hours of Sunday as evacuated residents were left without power for the entire night.
