A low pressure system has been forming off the east coast since Thursday, and moved closer to the Hastings on Friday.
Weatherzone's Max Gonzalez said the system looks likely to strengthen on Saturday. It is expected to spend the remainder of the weekend bringing rain to the Mid-North Coast as it moves north towards Queensland.
But it will be Sunday when conditions are nastiest for fans of the outdoors, Mr Gonzalez said.
"Sunday's looking to be the most dangerous. There'll be a wind change late on Saturday, which will be followed by heavy precipitation throughout Sunday," he said.
Winds of up to 80km/h are expected by the afternoon, he warned, meaning those on the foreshore and near the river will need to be careful. Parts of the eastern ranges are also likely to get a lashing during the day, he said.
Up to 20 millimetres of rain is expected in Port Macquarie over the weekend.
Saturday: Possible shower, 28 degrees, 71 per cent humidity.
Sunday: Possible shower, 26 degrees, 71 per cent humidity.
