The Bombers went down 2.5 (17) to 18.20 (128) to Coffs Swans at Laurieton Oval in a match that proved to be great experience for the club's younger brigade.
Just getting two sides on the paddock was an achievement on Saturday, and there were some tired blokes come fulltime in first grade.
"It was a really big effort from the club," coach Peter Gallagher said.
The Swans led at every turn in slippery conditions to send a message to the reserve-grade premiers that first grade wouldn't be a walk in the park.
Gallagher said it was a message that didn't need to be delivered.
"The boys are under no illusions," he said. "We look forward to working and improving through the season."
The Bombers' enthusiasm was evident for the whole match, Gallagher said.
He named Tyson Wiegold, Gus Crowley, Dylan Rumble, Matt and Andrew Gallagher and Kane Hedges as the standout players in the Bombers' effort.
The Bombers return to Laurieton Oval on Saturday for round two against North Coffs.
Gallagher looked forward to an improved performance, and was excited about what the Bombers could achieve.
"There's lots to work on and improve," he said.
