FORENSIC specialists have left the scene where a 44-year-old Port Macquarie man died after a stabbing attack on Wednesday morning.
But the realisation of the tragedy, which took place in a suburban street of Port Macquarie, has left the community reeling with shock.
Some residents are considering moving house.
"We just don't feel safe here anymore," one Norfolk Avenue resident told the Port News this morning. "When you hear something like that and then you see it, it's in everything you look at. The road, the street, the lawn - you can still see it all there."
Earlier today, neighbours said a violent altercation took place outside a unit complex on Norfolk Avenue shortly before 6am on Wednesday morning.
Moments later, the man was seen lying in the middle of the street with severe wounds from a stabbing attack.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the incident and pleading for the public to come forward with any information.
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
Wednesday, Morning update: Tragic stabbing starts new year.
A NEW Year's nightmare has unfolded on a suburban street after a 44-year-old Port Macquarie man was stabbed to death earlier this morning.
Emergency services were called to Norfolk Avenue near Windmill Hill at about 6am today January 1, 2014. Neighbours, including a young boy and his mother, reportedly heard the man scream for help as he stumbled from a property and on to the road.
Officers attached to the Mid North Coast Local Area Command arrived to find the victim lying in a pool of blood in the middle of the street.
Police said NSW Ambulance Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.
A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers and detectives. Authorities cordoned off the area where the man's body lay. The incident took place on the corner of Norfolk Avenue and Home Street in Port Macquarie.
Horrific tragedy too close to home.
A DESPERATE cry for help could be heard echoing from Norfolk Avenue to homes across the street, around the corner and up to hundreds of metres away. But many Windmill Hill residents would be completely oblivious to the tragic situation taking place on their door step.
From his window, Jason Taylor said he saw the stab-wound victim stumble on to the street.
"He was yelling for someone to call an ambulance, and then he pretty much fell in the middle of the road," Mr Taylor said. A boy and his mother, who had reportedly moved to the area from Canberra days earlier, were said to be among the first on the scene.
"The boy called the ambulance and I could hear him screaming 'mum, mum he's been stabbed'," Mr Taylor said. An off-duty nurse drove past shortly after police arrived and offered assistance. The nurse told the Port News the man appeared to be suffering from more than one stab wound and was bleeding profusely: "He didn't look good".
For neighbour Di Cosgayon, the last thing on her mind would be the possibility that the property neighbouring her backyard could become a crime scene.
"In the early hours of the morning I could hear a bit of an argument," Mrs Cosgayon said. "Then someone screaming to call an ambulance."Moments later, her husband would say "someone's been stabbed".
By the time she left her home, Ms Cosgayon said police were already at the scene and performing CPR.
Investigations continuing: police
Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing death of a local man.
A police dog was seen patrolling the cordoned off area of Norfolk Avenue and surrounding streets earlier today, while detectives and forensic specialists examined the scene of the crime.
Mid North Coast crime manager Steve Clarke said police are still urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the attack. He confirmed police had not yet identified the person responsible.
"A crime scene has been established and forensic police and detectives are in attendance and an investigation is underway," he told the Port News earlier today.
