Detective Inspector Steve Clarke said officers from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) had spent Friday morning with the 26-year-old surfer at Port Macquarie Base Hospital (PMBH). The officers interviewed, examined and took photographs of the wounds sustained by the man in the attack which occurred about 6.15pm.
"Those officers are satisfied it was a shark, but they don't know the species or size at this stage," Detective Inspector Clarke said.
It has also been revealed that between 30 and 40 surfers were in the water at Shelly Beach during the attack and the man was in white water near the shore at the time.
Detective Inspector Clarke said DPI officers would forward their evidence and findings to Dr Amy Smoothey, the specialist who investigated the tiger shark attack on Zac Young.
"It really is unfortunate that this comes on the back of such a sad incident last week," Detective Inspector Clarke said.
The man will have surgery at PMBH this afternoon to repair tendon and arterial damage in his right hand.
