A Josh Moore header was enough to give his team a 1-0 win over Wallis Lake, but his goal had a stroke of luck about it.
Moore’s goal came from a beautiful free kick swung in by Brett Ervine, but the awarding of the free kick was lucky. Matt Denham went down after being struck in the side of the head by the ball, and the referee ruled a foul.
Moore was off and celebrating when he rose above the Lake’s defence to guide the ball into the back of the net.
“It came off my shoulder,” he said after the game when asked who got the last touch.
Both teams had chances in a tussle of a match, but neither was able to find the back of net for the remainder of the final.
United had some heart-stopping moments but keeper Tom Rienstra was in fine form when it counted, and managed to keep everything out.
Port coach Nathan Attwells paid tribute to his back four in the win. The defence had worked hard all season and put the Green Bloods on the right track.
A loud United crowd was on hand to help the team home. There were plenty of chants ringing out from the moment the hosts took the lead.
