Missile misses out on 50m final

OUR James Magnussen has missed out on a place in the 50-metre freestyle Olympic final.

He finished 6th in his heat overnight and 11th overall.

Dispite the dissapointment, The Missile managed a wry smile happy that expectations had been lifted.

"I didn't put any expectations on myself," he said.

"This is the first year I have ever done a half-decent one (50m).

"I knew it had been a tough couple of days to back up from and I was a little bit rusty, but certainly I put everything into that and it wasn't too far off."

Magnussen admitted the past week had weighed heavy on his broad shoulders.

"I am pretty much mentally exhausted and physically not too far behind.

"I've got a day's rest now to recuperate and then we have the medley relay and I'm looking forward to that."

The medley relay is Magnussen's last chance at a London Olympic gold medal.

The race will air on Sunday at 5.25am.
