Mourners gather to pay their respects

AS POLICE searched to piece together the puzzle yesterday, mourners began to gather at the site of the Hill Street tragedy.

A 30-year-old woman, who asked not to be named, was “devastated”.

“It’s a devastating loss and it’s sad that something like that can happen here,” the Port Macquarie resident told the?Port News.

A 24-year-old male said he hoped anyone with information would contact the police.

At 3.30pm yesterday afternoon Margot Bennett, 54, of Port Macquarie taped a single red rose and a small card to a telegraph pole near where the woman died.

Ms Bennett did not know the victim but said she was deeply saddened by her death.

“She was somebody’s wife or somebody’s daughter or friend,” she said.

“I dont think you have to know somebody to feel that. This is incredibly sad, I hope they catch whoever did it,” Ms Bennett said.

Police investigations will continue.
