Gillespie hits back over tax-free threshold

February 14 2013 - 7:53am

The Nationals candidate for Lyne, David Gillespie says Robert Oakeshott’s claim that the Gillard government has somehow rewarded hard-working Australians by trebling the tax-free threshold to $18,200 doesn’t stack up.

"Hot on the heels of his mining tax gaffe, Mr Oakeshott has been exposed by another Labor con job," Mr Gillespie said.

"By now no one is surprised Rob Oakeshott is simply mouthing Julia Gillard’s lines.

"Firstly, it is compensation for the carbon tax. The Coalition will axe the carbon tax.

"Secondly, the effective tax-free threshold for 2011-12 was, in fact, $16,000 due to the impact of the Low Income Tax Offset (‘LITO’). Even the Government’s own tax scales made, and still make, that observation.

"When you combine changes to the LITO with the other changes being made as part of the compensation package for the carbon tax, much of the benefit of increasing the tax-free threshold is clawed back, leaving lower income families out of pocket again.

"Don’t be fooled. It’s not a tax cut, it’s a tax con."

Mr Gillespie said the Coalition would announce its tax policy before the next election.

"In the meantime, Rob Oakeshott would do well not to swallow everything this Prime Minister dishes up to him.

"Australians woke up to her and him long ago. Somehow he still hasn’t got the message," Mr Gillespie said.
