The 15-year-old fisherman landed a Blue Marlin weighing in at almost 150 kilograms in his first ever Golden Lure fishing event.
It took the youngster 40 minutes to bring in the 144.4 kg monster.
As expected the teenager was thrilled with his catch but was looking forward to even bigger catches.
“It is the biggest fish I have ever caught,” he admitted. “I’ve been fishing since I was about 10 but this is my first Golden Lure.
“Dad’s best is 190 kgs so I’m hoping to catch something that beats him.”
The event’s onshore coordinator Michael Townsend said the catch was a club record.
“It’s a very impressive catch especially when you see the size of him (Kurtis) compared to it,” he said.
Mr Townsend said the youngster’s catch was easily one of the early highlights of the competition and another impressive moment came from yet another local teenager.
Kaysie Fanzett is no stranger to hooking record catches after snaring an Australian record in the event last year with an impressive Dolphin fish.
The 13-year-old has continued on her impressive run in then tournament and landed another 13kg Dolphin fish on Saturday caught from the boat, Chika.
Despite a couple of impressive catches from young local fishermen Mr Townsend said, as a whole so far, the fish scene has been “slow”.
“It’s actually been rather disappointing but that’s mainly to do with the conditions,” he said with fishermen finding conditions to be sloppy on Saturday and windy on Sunday.
“The swell was a little more depleted on Sunday though,” he said. “As the week goes on the conditions are set to improve which means the fishing should too.”
Mr Townsend said the event although only a couple days in brings a huge financial boost to the town.
“There are 133 anglers all up and 32 boats,” he said.
“When you take into account the accommodation, fuel tackle and everything else they will spend money on while here it would have to bring upwards of $1 million to Port Macquarie.
