Nice gesture leads to ride of a lifetime

PORT Macquarie’s Bill Lane got the ride of a lifetime on Friday.

The veteran pilot was given the unique opportunity to be a passenger in a rare frontline Mustang WWII fighter plane.

It stopped off at Port Macquarie airport on it’s way to Evan’s Head for the Great Eastern Fly In.

Mr Lane’s good friend Judy Hodge organised the flight from Port Macquarie on Friday.

The historic aircraft is based in Caboolture and Maitland and boasts a whopping 1800 horsepower engine.

The excited Mr Lane said it was something to tick of his list of things he has always wanted to do.

The particular plane holds some significance for Mr Lane other then it’s historical importance.

“I nearly bought one from a station in Queensland in 1979 but the sale fell through,” he said.

The plane and pilot Geoff Kubank had a short stop over at Port Macquarie airport to pick Mr Lane up at about 10am before departing for Evan’s Head.
