About 10.45am a man, believed to be in his sixties, was riding a motorcycle north on the Summerland Way near Whiporie.
As the motorcycle neared the intersection of Whiporie Road it was involved in a collision with a Mazda utility.
It is believed the male utility driver wasn't hurt in the crash.
Despite the efforts of emergency services personnel on site, the motorcyclist died at the scene.
The motorcyclist’s death brings the State’s Christmas/New Year road toll to nine.
An increase in the number of people injured in crashes during Christmas and New Year has prompted police to urge motorists to think about the possible ramifications of their actions on the road.
Police have charged 415 people with drink driving and detected 6573 motorists speeding.
Operation Safe Arrival commenced last Friday (21 December 2012) and concludes at 11.59pm on Friday 4 January 2013, and targets speeding, drink-driving, seatbelt and other traffic offences.Double demerit points will be in place from 12.01am Friday 21 December 2012 until 11.59pm on Tuesday 1 January 2013 for speeding, seatbelt and helmet offences.Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said one of the biggest concerns for police was an increase in the number of reported major crashes.
“To date, there has been an increase in the number of people injured in crashes on NSW roads,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.
“At this point in Operation Safe Arrival, 369 people have been injured in crashes compared to 316 for the same point in last year’s operation.
“The impact of someone being injured in a road crash can and does stay with a family for long after the headlines fade.
“When you take control of a vehicle you must make a choice about how you act on the road and the impact that might have not only on yourself and those in your vehicle but those people on the road with you.”
