Birthday hat-trick the best pressie ever

A BIRTHDAY hat-trick from fast bowler Nick Bartlett was the highlight of St Paul’s/MacKillop’s first XI Downie Shield win over All Saints Maitland last week.

Terrific bowling from Bartlett and the rest of the attack allowed the Port team to defend the small total of 132 and advance to the final eight of the competition.

A superb diving catch from captain Ben Woodward at first slip swung momentum back to the visitors, just as it looked as it Maitland was on top at Wallalong.

It was described by one spectator as the catch of the century.

Bartlett returned figures of 4-14 from four overs.

When Kirk Lower took a great caught and bowled, the host team was reeling at 5-58 after 20 overs.

Great bowling from Jack Darcy and Lower, and superb fielding from Scott Dickson, Cameron Ashe and Sean Ellison helped clean up the tail for 76 in 29 overs.

Lower bowled 2.1 overs and took 4-3.

Tom Rienstra was also tight, with 0-8 from four overs.

Earlier, after winning the toss and batting, Darcy showed his all-round prowess, topscoring with 39.

Jamie Carroll scored 22 and Woodward 19.

A quarter-final showdown with Trinity College, Lismore, beckons. It’s set down for early next year.
