Crews were sent to the Winstead Rd area about 3.30pm after a grass fire jumped containment lines.
The fire had started on Tuesday afternoon and had burnt out 28 hectares of land.
A NSW Rural Fire Service spokeswoman said almost 30 hectares have now been burnt out and aircraft were now flying over the fire site to determine the ignition point.
She said it was possible a spot fire may have moved over containment lines but the cause was yet to be determined.
Large plumes of smoke from the blaze could be seen from as far as Port Macquarie.
Several fires are currently burning in bushland south of Kempsey at Kundabung and on Beranghi Road.
Spot fires are threatening several homes along Crescent Head Road near to the Seventh Day Adventist School, the Macleay Argus reports.
