Former Wollongong coach Mick McColl has made the trip north to live in Port, and has taken on a strong team.
He's also the Australian coach.
McColl predicted Port would give some of the powerhouses of the competition, like Wollongong, Canterbury and Easts, a scare this weekend.
"You're always a chance," he said after the team's training session at Tuffins Lane yesterday. "The games are only 30 minutes, and anything can happen."
Port Macquarie has the Australian mixed opens captain Kylie Hilder in its team. It also boasts the Coleman sisters, Kate and Lauren.
The format has changed slightly this year. Teams will play off for positions on Friday to see which competition they would take part in for the rest of the tournament.
McCall hoped for a place in the premier competition so he could take on his former team, Wollongong.
"I know them back-to-front," he said.
That team includes two of his daughters.
"That would be a real grudge match," he said. "But it's going to be very, very hard [to make it into the top pool]."
