The hotel overlooking Town Beach won two golds in the NSW Tourism Awards in Sydney on Thursday night – the Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism and the Deluxe Accommodation category.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council also took home gold in the Local Government Award for Tourism.
The awards, which come in the lead-up to the peak holiday season, celebrate outstanding achievements in tourism.
The Observatory’s Chris Denny said his reaction at the hotel’s win was one of disbelief.
“We’ve achieved the finals for eight years and it’s a bit like [tennis player] Andy Murray,” he said. “We’ve been recognised in a lot of other spheres but this has been a bit elusive.”

The Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism recognises successful tourism businesses which set out to minimise their environmental impact, conserve natural resources, respect local cultures and benefit local communities.
