THE great grandfather that stood up to two violent robbers has had a whirlwind week topped off by a wedding.
Ernie Whitfield became a national hero when he managed to fight off two aggressive home invaders recently.
The victim received numerous cuts and bruises from the attack but on Friday he was able to forget all about it.
His daughter Lori tied the knot with her partner Alan Parkin in a surprise intimate wedding in Mr Whitfield's backyard overlooking the canals.
"It was a real surprise, he said.
"A lot of family and friends were in town anyway for Danny's 30th birthday so they decided to get married while everyone was here."
The bride said it made sense to bring the wedding forward.
"We were going to get married in March next year in Lord Howe Island but there were a few people who said they couldn't make it," Mrs Parkin said. "Everyone was here so we decided we may as well do it."
The new bride said it was a nice way for her father to forget the recent violent events.
"It was nasty what happened to dad," she said. "Hopefully he can put it behind him and have a nice day."
