The Tacking Point Tavern-sponsored Port United first grade squad go into tomorrow’s round 5 encounter looking to build on positives from the past couple of games.
A win last Saturday over Port Saints was followed by a narrow loss mid-week against Old Bar in a match United know was one they let slip away.
A victory over Tuncurry Forster tomorrow, in front of the home crowd at Dixie Park, is now crucial for the Port outfit.
Last Saturday United improved immensely from their opening two hit outs and came away with a 2-0 win over Port Saints at Findlay Park. Simon Granfield scored the go-ahead goal in the 30th minute when he ensured the ball crossed the line following a Matt Denham flick on at the near post.
With 20 minutes remaining, a break down the left hand side led to a dangerous cross from Adam Woonton into the area and, after the initial strike on goal from James O’Connor was blocked, Denham drove the ball home to make it 2-0.
The trip to Old Bar on Wednesday night offered plenty of promise after that good outing and United continued on with a fine first half showing. A 1-0 lead probably should have been more with strong periods of play resulting in some narrow misses.
Mid-way through the opening half, a pin point cross from O’Connor found Sam McLean who headed the ball home following a great near post run.
Not long into the second half, United unfortunately found themselves trailing 2-1 with both goals gifted to the Barbarians’ attack.
The first from a mistimed back pass and the second from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. Despite further chances, United failed to find their way back into the game.
Forster Tuncurry who were promoted this season, showed in round 1 they’ll be a tough opponent when they took all 3 points against the Redbacks in Laurieton. In their only other outing, they went down 4-0 at the hands of Macleay Valley Rangers at Dangar Street.
However the Tigers will certainly fancy their chances if they can repeat the opening round performance, especially against a United side looking to get a foot hold early in the season.
The match will kick off at 3pm at Dixie Park following the reserves encounter at 1.15pm.
A good afternoon of football looks on the cards with all fans invited along to cheer on the United squads.
All Port United members are also invited to the Tacking Point Tavern tomorrow evening for a fancy dress members’ party. The theme is green to coincide with the club’s sponsorship.
