Where it all began
THE HISTORY OF UPTIN PRINT In 1882 Alfred Pountney, the son of a Rollands Plains grazier, founded the Port Macquarie News. Later, together with his son and daughter-in-law and later still, grandchildren, Alfred ran the paper until joined by a young Charles Uptin in 1932.
The Port Macquarie News, right from its beginnings, relied on and supported local businesses. As well as advertising, the Port Macquarie News printed cards and pamphlets for the town and its surroundings. Vineyards, tanneries, wheelwrights, butchers, barbers, general stores and boat-builders all participated in the growth of Port Macquarie through the pages of its local paper and the printed matter it produced for them.
In 1945 Charles Uptin bought the paper outright, with a five hundred pound deposit, and interest-free annual repayments of five hundred pounds until a full three thousand pounds was repaid. This money included the buildings and land in Clarence Street and printing machinery.
Soon after, Uptin Print was born as a separate entity and became the “printing arm” of the newspaper.
Today Uptin Print continues to proudly serve the local community and, being part of Rural Press/Fairfax Media, also regularly produces work for centres as far away as Mt Isa, Sydney and Whyalla – and a lot of places in between!
