NOT many in their life would brave an attempt at the infamous Hawaiian Ironman.
Even less would be travelling to the island nestled in the North Pacific Ocean to attempt only their second full distance Ironman.
But, that is exactly what Jeff Worth is doing.
The Port Macquarie father-of-two qualified for the Kona World Championships when he crossed the line in a time of 9.44 in his first ever race over the 226km distance.
“I was a little surprised that I did well enough to qualify,” Worth admitted.
“However, the guys in my training group said that I did stand a chance.”
Not a bad effort for a man who only took up triathlons about three years ago as a way to lose a bit of weight and get healthy.
But, the sub-transition line designer has progressively increased his distances and will, within a few weeks, brave the heat and windy conditions in one of the hardest races on earth.
“The course itself is not so hard but it’s fighting the elements,” the 35-year-old said.
“Regardless, it will be extremely difficult.”
The full-time employee has devoted between 14 to 19 extra hours to his training, tearing him away from his family, in preparation for the October 10 event.
However, they don't go home empty-handed.
“I’m taking the whole family with me,” Worth said.
Team Worth for the journey will be his wife, two kids, mum, uncle and aunt.
Now all that is left for the man is to arrive at his destination and relax.
“I have started to taper off the training now and I’m just really excited about getting there,” he said.
And, it is rubbing off on the youngsters too.
“My daughter is already talking about doing Ironman,” Worth said.
Worth and his family will leave home shores on October 1 to get into Kona 10 days before the event.
“It will be a chance to acclimatise a bit and also an opportunity to take a look at the course,” he said.
And, Worth saved the last word for his training partners.
“I really want to thank all the guys,” he said.
“Many of them have been trying to qualify for a while but they still got out there and supported me in all my training.”
