THE heavyweights of the 2010 Mid-North Coast Zone Rugby competition, Port Macquarie Pirates and Hastings Valley Vikings, will lock horns in the match of the round at Oxley Oval tomorrow.
The Port Panthers Vikings are also hosting their annual sponsors and ladies day to add atmosphere to the occasion.
And, what an afternoon it promises to be with the club tackling the Pirates in three grades as well as a Golden Oldies match, with the Wrinkled Horns desperate to break their on-going stalemate with the Vintage Ports.
The Coastline Credit Union First XV has only lost on one occasion this year – and that was to the undefeated Pirates in the season opener.
On that day, the Pirates were simply too good and have gone on to confirm themselves as the team to beat for the 2010 title.
But, head coach David Keys can’t wait for tomorrow to see how his squad fares against the Pirates.
“I will be honest, I want to win the game,” he admitted.
“However, we’re definitely up against it.
“They have a number of players in sensational form and an undefeated record speaks for itself.
“Our team that beat the Coffs Crushers 31-14 last week is a far different side, which took to the field against the Pirates in round one.
“Not necessarily in too many different players but a different attitude.
“The boys have learnt quickly that they have the talent to beat the top sides from Coffs – now, they have to face their biggest test of the season.”
The Vikings’ tryscoring ability has certainly improved over the past few weeks with the return of Jono Edwards.
After playing first grade for Sunnybank in Queensland’s premier division in 2009, outside the likes of Wallaby Digby Ioane, the youngster is back in Port Macquarie, much to the delight of the Hastings Valley contingent.
A genuine tryscoring machine, Edwards has crossed the white line on eight occasions in four games so far.
Last weekend, against the Crushers, he posted a hat-trick.
The Vikings’ Coast 2 Coast reserve grade side almost lost its game with the last-placed Southern Cross Uni after a bout of complacency.
But, the boys are expected to be switched on tomorrow.
They will be boosted by the return of the mighty McCormack brothers, Adam and Hamish, who are genuine match winners.
The Fastplast under 19s love their local derby, although one household in Port Macquarie has been a little tense.
Owen Roods, who is a front-row enforcer for the Vikings, has copped plenty from little brother Martin, who is a speedster in the Pirates backline.
The Vikings are hoping that Owen has the last laugh this weekend.
The 19s kick off the day from noon.
