FORMER Australian rugby great Tom Lawton will be the guest host at the Port Macquarie Pirates’ Bledisloe Cup function this month.
Lawton donned the Wallabies jumper between 1983 and 1992 playing at the highest level before representing Queensland.
He was the youngest hooker to play and made 41 Test appearances during 11 tours overseas.
The Pirates will also use the event on Saturday, July 31, as a fundraiser for the community’s own Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
Club president Denis Roberson said the night would appeal to many more than just followers of rugby union.
“This represents a great chance to take some time out with friends, enjoy a fabulous three-course meal, music from Andrew Best and no doubt a laugh and lesson or two from Tom Lawton,” he told the Port News.
“Tom is a top-shelf speaker who relates with disarming honesty and hilarious anecdotes his career choices that have lead to him to emerge a very successful executive in the financial markets industry.
“He now works with Macquarie Bank in Queensland and enjoys coaching and mentoring staff on the similarities between elite team sport and the workplace.
“Importantly, the event ties into a do or die match for the Wallabies.
“Australia last won the Bledisloe Cup in 2002 and, with this year’s series to be determined over four Tests, needs to win three of the games to secure the trophy.”
Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service community liaison officer Gordon Wiegold said the Pirates’ enthusiasm to raise money for the organisation was most valued.
“Community support is very important and ensures that the helicopters can provide life-saving assistance to people on the Mid-North Coast,” he said.
“An average of four people are assisted in the area each week.
“The missions include motor vehicle accidents, beach and bush rescues and transportation to specialist care.”
The Bledisloe Cup function will take place at The Westport Club.
Tickets are $60 per person (or $480 for a table of eight) and include a three-course dinner, complementary wine and music from Andrew Best.
Tickets can be purchased at The Westport Club reception desk or by calling Westport’s conventions and events coordinator on 6583 1499.
Bookings close Monday, July 26.
