No stopping the Breakers

03 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
IS there any stopping the juggernaut that is the Port City Breakers’ charge towards the finals?

That question may well be answered tomorrow in the top of the table clash with the Wauchope Blues.

The Breakers jumped ahead of the Forster Tuncurry Hawks, on for and against, with a 38-10 win over Camden Haven on Wednesday night.

The visitors were without captain-coach Daniel Dumas and dynamic youngster Josh Osborne but still managed to put the Eagles to the sword.

And, now, it is the Blues in the firing line.

The Breakers take the short trip inland to the Lank Bain Sporting Complex with the knowledge that a win will see the Port City outfit grab top spot for the first time in 2009.

One of the reasons for the Group 3 defending premiers’ mid-season move up the ladder has been the performance of its young guns.

Leading the charge is second-rower Osborne.

The Year 12 student is one of a throng of teenagers driving the Breakers towards the finals.

“It has been great this year.

“I am learning a lot from guys like Dan [Dumas] and the team is really enjoying playing footy,” Osborne admitted.

The 17-year-old said he thought the side had made improvements in the way they were communicating on the park and it was showing on the scoreboard.

And, that will be put to the test against the league leaders this weekend.

“We know they have a strong forward pack,” the Newman Senior Technical College student said.

“They have gone through the season undefeated and you can’t do that without playing good consistent football.”

Osborne, along with the other leading young Breakers Mitch Fowler, Zac Alyward and Jesse Gleeson, hope to inflict the first loss on the Blues this season with the added incentive of doing it in Wauchope’s heartland.

“We know we could have beaten them the first time round,” he said.

“So, we are confident we can get the job done.”

Coach Dumas echoed his young charger’s sentiment.

“This is the game we’ve been talking about for the past three weeks,” he admitted.

“We weren’t really worried about Wauchope at the beginning of the year but they have shown that they are a good team.”

Dumas said he was happy with his side’s past two performances against Camden Haven and Forster.

“I was really disappointed that a couple of Hawks players were not cited for a dangerous tackle on one of our young players,” he said.

“But you can't control everything and we will just look after what we are doing.”

Tomorrow’s Battle of the Hastings kicks off at 3.15pm.
