THE Port Macquarie Boardriders Rugby League Football Club is welcoming home Luke Gilchrist.
The talented playmaker, who started at the Boardies when he first moved to town, will step into the head coaching role in 2010 after stints with the Port Macquarie Sharks, Port City Breakers, Macquarie Hotel and Lake Cathie Raiders.
“We’re thrilled to have Gilly (Gilchrist) on board,” club president Craig Taylor said.
“I’ve been trying to get him back for the past three seasons.
“His understanding and knowledge of the game will be invaluable to us.
“He’ll be assisted by 2009 player of the year Cyril Marchant and Breakers’ tough forward Brad Moon.
“We’re expecting all our youngsters from the last two seasons to be on deck again – and the experience they’ve gained will shine through in the 2010 Hastings League.
“I’d like to thank former coach Tony Dunn for all his hard work with the boys.”
Gilchrist, who previously spent three years with the Boardies, admitted he was looking forward to the challenge.
“I think I can build on the club spirit as well as improve the results on the field,” he told the Port News.
“We’ll have the nucleus of a very young side and, hopefully, attract a few quality players to the Boardies.
“There is plenty of potential in the club.
“Our goal is to sneak into the play-offs after narrowly missing out in 2009.”
The Boardies will host a meet the coach and Christmas get-together at McInherney Park on Saturday, December 5, from noon.
All players, current and prospective, and their families are welcome to attend.
Newcomers looking for a run can contact Craig Taylor or Cyril Marchant on 0403 192 521.
