THREE matches – three victories!
The Port City Breakers signalled their arrival as a true rugby league force in town at the Regional Sports Stadium on Saturday night.
And, quite simply, the Port Macquarie Sharks were outclassed in all grades.
The Breakers captured the historic encounter between the two clubs 32-18, the reserves hammered their counterparts 48-12 and the under 18s prevailed 20-12 in a red-letter day for the organisation.
“Rugby league was definitely the winner,” Port City mentor Ben Sprague said.
“While we’re delighted to come out on top, it was great to see so much interest in the match.
“The only downside was the weather, which probably prevented a lot more people from attending the game.
“I really hope it becomes an annual fixture.
“We’ll now ease things off over the next couple of weeks, before preparing for Wauchope in our season opener.”
While the Breakers’ players, coaching staff and officials celebrated the occasion afterwards, it was a different story in a sombre Sharks camp.
“We’re gutted,” one player admitted.
“It’s just like losing a grand final.”
Most pundits predicted a fiery clash and that’s exactly what the 1500-plus spectators witnessed.
Port City’s pack – Mitch Fowler, Bleu Tamatoa, Glen Littler, Daniel Dumas, Adam Atkins and Dane Dickson – threw itself into the fray, despite the efforts of Port Macquarie’s starting six – Matt Blake, Nathan Kelly, Jeremy Lang, Michael Bright, Danny Graham and Joel Asher.
But, their collective endeavour gave Breakers duo, halfback Russell Gordon and five-eighth Josh Hyde, a solid platform to control the backs, which is where the game was won.
Classy centre Clint Walker then produced a man of the match performance, bagging five tries in the 14-point triumph.
When he scored his fifth consecutive four-pointer, midway through the second period, the Breakers enjoyed a 26-12 advantage.
The Sharks opened proceedings in the third minute when, against the run of play, Blake and Bright combined to create space out wide for Harley Gore, which fullback Jamie Preston capitalised on. Five-eighth Jake Green added the extras for a 6-0 lead.
It took five minutes for the first flare-up – Port City winger Jason Jones receiving a stint in the sin bin.
Soon after, Breakers prop Fowler resented a tackle and reacted – which resulted in an all-in brawl.
He also gained some time to cool his heels.
Even down two men, Port City spun the ball wide on the fifth tackle and Walker stepped back inside the defence to dive over. Hyde levelled it up at 6-all.
The Sharks were reduced to 12 as Kelly received his marching orders for 10 minutes.
Almost immediately, long passes from Gordon and Hyde gave Walker room to move – and he made no mistake. Hyde’s successful conversion put the Breakers in front 12-6 at the interval.
Port City broke the Sharks’ resolve in the 42nd minute when Walker intercepted and raced 30m untouched. Hyde raised the flags again, pushing the side ahead 18-6.
Walker’s fourth, which went unconverted, extended the Breakers margin to 22-6.
The Sharks hit back in the 55th minute, Kelly storming over near the uprights. Green sent the ball over the black dot and the side trailed 22-12.
However, Port City refused to relent.
In the 62nd minute, Hyde kicked ahead, following a scrum win, and Walker pounced on a Sharks’ fumble. Although Hyde missed the kick, the Breakers led 26-12.
Youngster Josh Osborne put the icing on the cake when he stunned his rivals with a devastating run to the line. Hyde nailed goal number four and a 32-12 lead.
A consolation try to Sharks’ centre Keiran Vale was too little, too late.
PORT CITY BREAKERS 32 (Clint Walker 5, Josh Osborne tries; Josh Hyde 4 goals) defeated PORT MACQUARIE SHARKS 18 (Jamie Preston, Nathan Kelly, Keiran Vale tries; Jake Green 3 goals)
