THEY say the cream rises to the top.
And, that is exactly what happened in the Battle of the Hastings at the Lank Bain Sporting Complex on Saturday when the Port City Breakers defeated the Wauchope Blues 42-26.
The Port City outfit demolished, devoured and deconstructed their cross-highway rivals in a performance that shifts the Group 3 favouritism from the Blues to the Breakers.
Port City’s first year coach Daniel Dumas led from the front with a players’ player performance, but it was the heart of his men that put the biggest smile on the former NRL star’s face.
“I think they are starting to realise how good this team really is and can be,” Dumas said.
“We are still learning each week and this was no different.”
The Breakers didn’t have it all their own way for 80 minutes and trailed by 10-0 early, before regrouping and wearing down their opposition.
The team’s youngsters are showing that they are not one-game-wonders and, as the Breakers put together a solid run without a loss, they are showing consistency that would be the envy of many coaches.
“I have been telling the boys that they need to back up week-to-week,” the 26-year-old said.
“There is no glory in one good performance, only in consistency.”
The visitors started a little complacently, however with every minute they warmed more and more into the contest.
The hosts did all they could with some fierce defence early but the men from the coastal town wouldn’t take a backward step.
“Chook (Mitch Fowler) just kept hitting it up into (Tim) Coombes all day and it really gave the team confidence,” Dumas said.
“Zac (Alyward) made some mistakes early but he learnt from them and improved.
“The composure came and, with it, came the points.”
Another plus was the performance of five-eighth Russell Gordon, who took over from Adrian Daley jnr.
At half-time, the Breakers had reeled in the Blues’ early lead and took to the sheds with a healthy 22-14 advantage.
In the second period, the visitors were never challenged and coach Dumas said it was the perfect lead in to a couple of hard games before the finals.
“Wingham, this weekend, is going to be a handful,” he said.
“We had two games in three days and we need to keep this run going.
“It is now that we would really appreciate our supporters to come out and be the 18th man for us.”
Wauchope coach Greg Hurrell admitted the Blues were “out enthused today”.
“To their credit, Port dominated and they deserved the win,” he said.
“We know we can play better than that and now we will just focus on winning and getting a home final.”
For most of the season, it looked like the Blues’ horse may have bolted but the top three is now very congested.
Each one of Port City, Wauchope and the Forster Tuncurry Hawks will have to milk every last point out of the remaining games for the chance to host a home final.
Reserve grade saw the Breakers claim the honours 24-8 with a double to Brent Conroy and four-pointers to Ben Hyde, Matt Woods and Carl Jones.
Josh Hyde landed two goals.
The Breakers’ under 18s went down 38-10.
