Hot beach volleyball action coming this way

25 Jan, 2006 12:00 AM
EXPECT Olympians, national champions and international challengers.

The Vodafone Beach Volleyball Tour boasts the best Australia has to offer in the sport and it is coming to Port Macquarie next season.

If this year's player rankings are anything to go on, the calibre of athletes is going to be hot come next summer on Town Beach.

Remember Queensland Olympians Summer Lochowicz, Annette Huygens-Tholen and Natalie Cook? They are coming first, third and tenth on the 2006 tour respectively.

Representing the men are the likes of Julien Prosser, Australia's number one player, Brett Richardson, Western Australia's world tour challenger, and bronze medallist in the Portugal World Tour, from South Australia, Joshua Slack.

Expect the best and expect a weekend of fun, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council says.

The council learned it had won the right to host the event this week.

Unlike the Ironman, the drawcard for this event is not competitor numbers, but rather media exposure.

The bid for a round of the Australian tour was based on the tourism it could generate for the Hastings.

And, where this national event goes with its top level athletes, the metropolitan media follows.

Council's sports development manager Glen Caldwell said the event was largely self sufficient - again unlike the Ironman which requires hundreds of volunteers - but council would be putting its efforts into preparing the beach and promoting the tour.

"It is another feather to our bow," Mr Caldwell said.

A date for the event is yet to be set, but it will happen in December this year or January 2007.
