ONE brilliant quarter enabled the Hastings Valley Onyx representative team to capture the Lifestyle Magazine Netball Premier League crown at Macquarie Park on Saturday.
And, the 60-26 triumph over arch rivals Coffs Harbour also allowed the hosts to erase last year’s heart-breaking grand final loss.
In front of a healthy crowd, on hand to soak up the Hastings Valley Netball Association’s Community Spirit Day, the Onyx began slowly, as their opposition grabbed the first three goals.
However, despite some inaccurate shooting early on, the local outfit pegged back the difference and the two sides went to the opening spell locked at 10-all.
The injection of Kellie Mann in the second term sparked the Onyx, who dominated the period.
With Melissa Bowler and Kate MacInnes hitting the target, and defenders Shannon Noble and Naomi Haylett providing a tower of strength at the back, Hastings Valley outscored Coffs Harbour 19-2 to lead 29-12 at half-time.
The Onyx lifted its intensity after the break as Kate Lister, Rochelle Foran, Emily Lewis and Larissa Matheson controlled the play, adding a further 16 goals to the tally.
Enjoying a 45-20 advantage, and with injured star Alana van der Linden cheering on her team mates from the sideline, Hastings Valley showed Coffs Harbour no mercy in the final quarter.
The visitors tried desperately to reduce the margin, but the Onyx countered every move and retaliated twofold.
In the end, Hastings Valley was too tall, too quick and too skilful.
Boosted by another 15-6 term, the Onyx ran out comfortable winners 60-26.
