THE 2009 $66,000 Tooheys Champion of Champion Pairs was off to a great start at the Port Macquarie City Bowling Club on Monday.
Clear skies, comfortable temperatures and free-running greens greeted the teams for the opening round of the four-day tournament.
Following three games, only four outfits remained undefeated.
Cabramatta’s Andrew Todd and Ryan Bester registered three wins + 38 shots and Westport duo Bryce Stewart and Bruce Anderson recorded a likewise number of victories + 24 shots.
North Haven pairing Laurie Dodd and Dave Richardson finished + 23 shots and Mick Linnell and Chris Couchman, of Merrylands, had a plus tally of 16.
A total of 15 teams won two games, with margins ranging from 26 shots to -11.
Some of the high-profile skips, to capture just one, included Australian representative Nathan Rice, Shane Gittoes and local hope Joel Burke.
Yesterday’s round featured the likes of David Holt, Troy Summerville, Ian “Rocky” Stone, Kevin Trezise, Shane Globits, Mark Casey, Shane Garvey, Jessie McKenzie, Wayne Turley, Steve Glasson and Leif Selby.
The top 48 teams from Monday and Tuesday will progress to the sectional play today.
The competition concludes tomorrow.
