 Many genuine chances

Many genuine chances

30 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
IT is one of the most even and competitive race meetings of the season at the Port Macquarie track this afternoon.

Every race on the card throws up four, and sometimes five, genuine winning chances.

And, if you can snare a winner or two, you should be able to turn a profit on the eight-event TAB program.

Below is a quick look at all of the races.

Race 1 Coca Cola Maiden 1500m

LOCAL Homenow steps out for race start 14 and today could be his lucky day.

He loomed up to win last start at Coffs Harbour but was gunned down by a better horse on the day (Power Quest) when second.

Significantly they beat the other horses by six lengths.

From barrier four, he should get a great run and beat a moderate lot.

Pimpala Corvette was good first up when second to Silent War at Coffs Harbour - his first run for a year.

He then went to the provincials and got lapped but this is much easier.

Both Just Relax (green and uncomfortable on the fence on debut) and Tartunka finished side-by-side mid field in the race won by Aim High at Taree last week.

They are the other hopes in the thinnest race of the day.

Race 2 Carlton Draught Maiden 1200

GOOD race with the horses boasting provincial form the ones to beat.

Midnight Albert was well-backed on debut at Newcastle and ran a terrific race when beaten just under two lengths by Princess Paige over 900m.

Good draw and the 2kg claim for Alex Stokes won’t hurt either.

Miss January was fourth at Newcastle and then showed good pace to lead at Kembla before running fifth when with Team Hawkes.

Now with Terry Evans at Tuncurry, she will be hard to catch.

The Zipster was very consistent at the provincials before a dismal performance last start but is a huge chance despite a wide draw.

Liked Skydome’s strong second to Aim High last week at Taree.

He led and kicked on very strongly and looks a big improver to me.

A Little Luck is another with definite each-way claims after a good run in Class 1 company last time out.

Unworry ran a good race in the Scone Inglis Classic back in May and is worth keeping an eye on first up from a spell.

Race 3 Racing NSW Apprentice School Benchmark 70 1500m

SAFEAS looks a fair thing but the speed in the race could bring about his undoing if the breaks don’t go his way.

He lands here after a great second to Field Dictator in the Wingham Cup last week, it’s a good class drop.

He is third up from a spell and on the limit, so jockey skills will be all important from his tricky gate.

But, he is the one they will all have to beat.

Irish Cross and Igotthelastone both like to lead as does the stayer No Limitation, so the speed could be on.

Strong Gain has good form for this with a win over Kanter Brau at Cessnock and a fair run over 1900m at Canterbury last start.

Race 4 VB Gold Benchmark 55 2000m

THIS is a real lottery.

Maybe getting back on a good track will help Wannabe.

He was disappointing on the slow last start behind Our Stawell Gift but he hates the wet.

There are two lead-at-all-cost horses in this race in Its Clangtime and Our Stawell Gift, one will have to hand up or they both will be out of business.

The others are all plodding stayers with the horse clearly in the best form King Lypahrd, a five-length last in the Gosford Cup last start to Spinney and a huge chance - but 59kg?

Little Flying Intent was a good run when second at Taree last week and must rate a chance in a very tough assignment for punters.

Race 5 Prime television Open Handicap 1100m

THEY will go helter skelter here and it will be survival of the fittest.

The one horse that is very fit and very well-weighted is Jestachenka.

He has been racing well with big weights and drops from 58kg (when a good fourth to the smart Maiditothemoon last start) to 54.5 here and will feel like he has no jockey on him.

Bad gate the only worry but he is each-way all day long.

In a very even race, Country Tide will be right there.

He won in good style at Newcastle last start but his big hang up is gate eight.

He will be three wide the trip you would think however that may still not stop him.

The Sheik drops in weight also and has a gun gate; he will be fitter for a super third to Maiditothemoon at this track last time out.

I will be laying Sequent (probably makes it the bet of the day now).

She is only small and has to carry 59kg (she has a big heart though) and she will find it hard to get an easy lead.

Race 6 Port Macquarie Race Club Conference and Function Centre Handicap 1000m

THE best race of the day with several promising sprinters to face the starter.

The claim of 3kg for Michael Fitzgerald should help the Gosford horse Magnification sweep down the outside to victory.

She is Hawkesbury placed and has finished just two lengths off them at Gosford and Kembla so this is suitable.

It’s Our Turn is very speedy but has to lump 58kg after a narrow Newcastle win last start.

The local horses showing promise are Why So Serious who bolted in by five in a very weak maiden last start.

Better Not Doubt looks like a potential 1400 to 1600m horse to me and once again they may just be a bit nippy for him - he has scope though.

Race 7 Mount Franklin Benchmark 55 1500m

SURELY today must be the day for Nepalese - he is flying but keeps shooting himself in the foot by being tardily away.

He scorched home from further behind than the house payments last start when third at Taree to Monde and a repeat simply wins the race over the extra 100m he has today.

He needs to get a bit closer to the lead as there is very little speed in this race outside of Aftadaka who big chance if left alone in front.

Bandmaster is in the same boat.

He has been crying out for a distance like this and he too rattled home from the back in a leader-dominated affair won by Xxarmelody at this track.

Race 8 Yellowglen Benchmark 55 Handicap 1200m

A TRICKY ending to the day.

Wafer had zero luck last start at Coffs when badly held up for a run and needs the pace on here to swamp them.

She has a good finishing sprint on her day.

Brado’s Boy has 59kg but the former WA galloper is getting closer to a win.

Lion’s Den goes like a scalded cat and will make sure this is truly run from the 14 alley; he bolted in at Grafton two starts back.

The former bookies pin up Tivoli Beau looks as though he has really matured into a nice three-year-old with wins at his past two starts.

An all-the-way victory at Coffs was his latest effort.

Gorborsaan loves this track and was fair here last time when he loomed up but could not go on with it when sixth to Xxarmelody.

Bookies best:

Graeme Cook is keen on Just Relax in the opening event of the day.

“They backed it big time with me at Taree last week and it had no luck at all,” Cook said.

“It will be improved by that experience and I think will be spot on target on Monday.”

Under the odds:

Cookie the bookie thinks that Leica Alot will struggle after a month off to beat a smart line-up in race three.

“She was disappointing at Grafton last start and rises in grade here and no start for four weeks is a worry,” Cook admitted.
