A HUGE and vibrant crowd set the Port Macquarie Racecourse alight on Friday for the traditional New Year’s Day meeting.
Locals and holiday-makers had a fantastic day out as the new racing year got into full swing on a hot and humid afternoon.
The on-track action was thrilling and punters and bookies staged a great battle throughout proceedings.
Race 1 1100m Maiden
TAREE trainer Nick Chambers led in winner number one for 2010 when the easing favourite Dare To Challenge ($2.70) fought back hard to claim the first.
After jumping clearly in the lead, the favourite only had one serious challenger for the entire race and that was the Gosford visitor Puzzlemaster ($10), who raced on his outside and they staged a two-horse war for the full 1100m.
“The other horse definitely headed me at the 300m mark but I still had a bit up my sleeve,” apprentice and winning rider Michael Fitzgerald told Chambers.
“He did well first up to fight back and still has some improvement in him.”
The trainer added “his mother owned the horse, so it was good to start the New Year in the good books with her.”
But, he was struggling to know where to place the horse at his next start.
Third home was the stayer Moorefield ($9), which made up many lengths on the first two horses over the final 100m and may develop into something, but over distances far longer than that of 1100m.
Race 2 1100m Maiden
THE track touts, urgers, hangers-on and coat tuggers all wanted to tip this winner, the debutant Lionhearted Girl ($3).
After walking into the betting ring, 20 blokes sidled up and said this thing of Quinn’s will win by panels.
Marc (Quinn), her trainer, had her in at Taree tomorrow but wanted to run on Friday where he thought she was a certainty - that was the general theme of most of the conversations.
Well, they got it right this time as Lionhearted Girl won by eight lengths, with rider Allan Chau looking back over his shoulder to see where the others were - but there were no others!
They were in another race.
Quinn was not on track as he was at Randwick with his horse Seem I’m but stable apprentice Chau did the talking post race.
“She jumped good but got a little squeeze, so I just steadied her and took my time rounding them up.”
Round them up she did and, by the time the home turn was reached, this race was as good as over, the daughter of All Courage showing an above-average turn of foot.
She ran nearly two seconds faster than the first race and looks to have a bright future.
Haniki Girl ($7) ran second just ahead of the unlucky If You Knew ($2.30), which copped a bad check at the 600m and was out of business.
Race 3 1800m Benchmark 50
FEEL good story number one of the day when the Wayne Wilkes-trained King Shane ($4.20) led virtually all of the way to capture the stayers.
King Shane’s rider Melissa Brown celebrated her maiden victory at just her third start.
The 4kg claiming apprentice wept tears of joy and relief when she returned to scale and was cheered wildly by the crowd to cap off one of the most memorable experiences of her young life.
“We had to work through to hold the lead and I did not want to give it up as he was travelling so well,” said Brown, who sported a very big smile.
“I was just swinging on him down the back straight and knew that he had plenty to give.
“I hardly had to move on him down the straight - it’s just unreal to have ridden a winner already!”
King Shane has been crying out for some longer distances, according to Wilkes, and he was especially confident that Brown could land her first winner on him.
“He had a lot more to give,” the apprentice said.
Stay with him punters!
Team Thunderstone ($7) did well to run second after a bit of a break and will strip fitter next time.
Roslyn Chapel ($3) was third a long way (more than five lengths) from the winner.
Race 4 1500m Benchmark 55
FEEL good story of the day number two.
Ron and Wilga Ingram have been racing horses for just over 30 years and they brought up a major milestone when the mudlark, swimmer and wet track specialist Feisty Minx ($3.80) took out the penultimate event on the program.
You see it was their 100th winner as owners and, although they have been trapped on 99 for a long time, they knew the day was coming where they could claim the century.
“It’s about time,” Ron Ingram said to winning rider Marlon Dolendo.
“I have been waiting almost six months for this.”
“Well, you should have put me on more of your horses sooner,” Dolendo shot back.
Trainer Neil Godbolt said the Ingrams were fantastic people to train for.
“You wouldn’t meet a nicer couple,” he said.
“Feisty Minx had been working well prior to the race and the rain that fell during the week just made her an even better thing.”
Brought into the race steadily from the back of the field at the 600m mark, the mare swooped on the leaders and has never missed a place on heavy going.
She toyed with them late to win nicely.
Enclosure watchers liked the look of Cane Champagne ($7), who tried very hard for second but was no match.
Island Dane ($4) bobbed to get third just ahead of Diatastic.
Race 5 1100m Benchmark 45
APPRENTICE Vicky Schubert and trainer Bob Milligan combined to win the last when Royal Sports ($4.80) flew home from well back to take the prize.
“He can do that the horse, one day he will charge home and you think he’s on track, then next start he will come out and do nothing,” a slightly rueful Schubert said.
Royal Sports has now won four races from 47 starts and three of them have been on wet tracks, so that’s his go.
He charged home to beat Port Commands ($6).
The outsider, Beyond Reach ($21), was third in the most thrilling of finishes where horses were stretched right across the track.
Run of the day: Lionhearted Girl
Ride of the day: Vicky Schubert (Royal Sports). It takes a good rider to coax the best out of Royal Sports by the sounds of it!
Day’s disappointment: Pastoral Pursuits ($3.60) had to pass a vet check to run and was gone on the home turn when last to King Shane
