PORT Macquarie News general manager Janine Buesnel was on hand to present the trophies to the winners and runners up of the Charles Uptin Knockout on Thursday.
After being played at the Port Macquarie Golf Club for more than half a century, the event has returned home.
Sixty one years ago Charles Uptin, then the proprietor of the Port Macquarie News, donated the trophies for a fourball knockout that was known as the News Knockout.
When he sold the paper the event was renamed the Charles Uptin Knockout and he and his family had 60 years of sponsoring the event.
It is fitting that the Port Macquarie News has again taken over as the sponsor.
At the presentation to this year’s winners, club captain Keith Heap made special mention of the contribution that Charles Uptin had made to the Port Macquarie Golf Club.
He noted Uptin, more than any other individual, was responsible for the golf club being on its present site.
The 61st winners of the knockout were Brad Hawkins and Hayden Bennett.
They beat John Dawson and John Scaysbrook at the first hole of sudden death play-off after the two pairs had been square after the regulation 18.
Bennett and Hawkins had to come back from two down with two holes to play.
