Women's touch decider lives up to hype

10 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THE Port Macquarie Touch Association’s women’s A grade decider lived up to the hype and expectation at Wayne Richards Park on Friday night.

Despite the constant threat of rain, wind, hail and all other tempests, everyone in attendance was enthralled by the high quality game.

The showdown featured the second-placed Bass n Side and Hastings Physio, which finished fourth on the ladder.

Both sides entered the match in great form.

Bass n Side upset minor premiers Laurieton Hotel Motel in a tense drop-off to gain direct entry into the grand final.

Hastings Physio, on the other hand, was forced to play three elimination games.

They convincingly defeated Port Premier Plumbing first up then accounted for third-placed Port Macquarie Orthodontics 3-2 in a cliff-hanger that went right down to the whistle.

The final, against Laurieton Hotel Motel, was a ripper.

After the scores were locked at 4-all at full-time, Hastings Physio outlasted their rivals in one of the longest drop-offs, approximately 15 minutes, in the history of Port Macquarie Touch.

In Friday night’s finale, the two combatants did not disappoint.

At half-time, Bass n Side led 2-1 but there were opportunities missed from both teams that could have changed the score dramatically.

The second period continued with fantastic attack and defence, a try each setting up a 3-2 margin late in the match.

But, Hastings Physio was unable to maintain their fairytale run.

Bass n Side’s points were posted by Jayne Pepper, Amanda Butler and Linda Bryan, who made it back from injury to help win the big one.

For Hastings Physio, Leigh Carlton and Julie Seward crossed for their two tries.
