Rowers target mini marathon

25 Jun, 2010 06:00 PM
THE Port Macquarie Rowing Club, along with major sponsor Port Macquarie Rydges, is gearing up for the 3 Rivers Mini Marathon in August.

The event, now in its fifth year, has seen numbers increase from an initial modest turnout to almost 150 entries and 78 craft in 2009.

The Rydges Port Macquarie 3 Rivers Mini Marathon, to take place on Sunday, August 8, is open to any non-motorised water vessel, so paddlers across the spectrum – from those in laid-back fishing kayaks through high-speed surf skis and sculls, to sur and dragon boats – may participate.

The course, which starts in the Wilson River, leads into the Maria and finishes in the Hastings River, meandering through stunning wilderness and pastoral areas.

There are no major hazards (although a few have run aground on sandbanks in the past) and the course is safety-patrolled, so the entire family can join in the fun.

“The distance of 26km is a perfect sprint distance for the competitive paddler, while remaining easily manageable for recreational or family paddlers,” club president Tony Jonas said.

“The course ends at the Port Macquarie Rowing Clubhouse, where the Blue Note Ensemble will play mellow jazz, while seasoned chefs offer hungry paddlers a choice of a free barbecue meal.

“There’ll also be activities and entertainment for spectators on the bank.

“Given the diversity of craft and their differing speeds, the event is not a race.

“But, times are recorded, so paddlers can aim for a personal best, or compete informally with others in their category.

“Certificates with paddlers’ times are produced for all finishers, and a complete list is published in the local press and on our website.

“This year, for the first time, thanks to sponsors, prizes will be offered to the first-comers in the major categories.

“And, due to the generosity of Rydges, there are two other great opportunities.

“Firstly, event supporters, participants and the media will be invited to attend a cocktail party at Rydges the evening before the race (for details, see www.rydges.com/cwp/3rivers2010).< p>“We’ll also have a raffle with three outstanding prizes of two nights for two, including buffet breakfasts, in – 1, an Ocean View Spa Suite at Rydges Gold Coast; 2, a Deluxe Water View Balcony room at Rydges Port Macquarie; and 3, a Superior Water View room at Rydges Port Macquarie.”

Early bird entries cost $25 (up to and including June 25), normal $30 (up to and including July 25) and late $35 (up to 7am on the morning of the race).
