LAKE Cathie’s Bennett Powell is in top form at the moment – and looking forward to next month’s 2010 Special Olympics Australia National Games.
The youngster has been selected in the New South Wales squad, which will compete against other states and territories in Adelaide from April 19 to 24.
Powell is scheduled to contest the 100m and 200m sprints as well as the long jump and the relay.
And, according to his coach Rod Nugent, he’s right on track.
“His sprint training is spot on,” he said.
“With the completion of a long jump pit at the Lake Cathie Sporting Field, he’s starting his preparation for that discipline.
“Benny had to raise a levy of $2500 as his contribution for travel and accommodation for the Games.
“Thanks to the members of the Lake Cathie Bowling and Recreation Club, this amount plus a bit more was raised within a few weeks.
“In appreciation of the club’s support, Benny has been assisting with the organisation’s Friday night raffles.
“He’d like to thank the Lake Cathie Sports Council for allowing the long jump pit to be installed, as well as Brett Bland from BR Bland Bob Cat Services for the excavation of the pit and Bonny Hills Garden Centre for supply of sand at a very reasonable price.”
Meanwhile, Special Olympics Mid-North Coast will take five athletes to Coffs Harbour on March 28 to run with the Special Olympics torch.
Four of them are competing at the Games in Adelaide.
“These athletes are still trying to raise the required $2500 to attend the event,” Nugent said.
“We have two tenpin bowlers in the state team and two basketballers, along with Benny.”
