Port United wins reserve grade crown

28 Sep, 2009 04:00 AM
PORT United lifted the Football Mid-North Coast Premier League reserve grade trophy on Saturday following a nail-biting victory over the Old Bar Barbarians in Taree.

Fittingly, Steve Lawrence was man of the match in probably his last game for the club.

The terrific stalwart led United to a triumph in a penalty shoot-out.

The 2009 decider ended 0-all when the final whistle sounded and extra-time failed to separate the two combatants.

United also had a man sent off in the second half, which meant the players had to dig real deep.

In the shoot-out, young Port Macquarie keeper Jack Symons saved two penalties.

Meanwhile, Sam Cass, Andy Collins and captain Nathan Wade all netted their shots to give United a 3-0 result.

In the first grade fixture, the Taree Wildcats upset defending premiers Macleay Valley Rangers 2-1.
