Over 35s A grade - Port Tree Fellas 2 defeated Cows FC 1
RELIVING past glories, ability to nurse ageing bodies, able to have a good laugh, a touch of competitive spirit and, above all, an esky is a requirement for most in the over 35's competition.
Especially eventual winners Port Tree Fellas, who have all bases covered in those areas.
They came up against Cows FC who was brimming with confidence after defeating a strong Port FC Old Boys outfit, who topped the table, in the semi-final.
The Tree Fellas had defeated fellow United club mates and defending champions in their semi and were keen to make up for losing the A grade final last year.
A quick-fire start (early adrenalin for these old lads) saw the Tree Fellas take the lead in the opening exchanges when Mick Martin squeezed the ball into the back of the net from an acute angle.
From that moment however, the match became a stalemate with neither side being able to gain any ascendancy.
It took until the ninth minute of the first half for the next close chance, when the Tree Fellas’ Glenn Pollard hit the post from a wide angle.
Shortly afterwards, another strike on goal from the Tree Fellas was brilliantly saved by the impressive Beau Bennett in the Cows’ goals.
At the start of the second period, just like in the first half, a goal was scored in the opening minute.
This time it was Cows FC via Les Tregier, who finished well from a long ball from Steve Banhan.
Now level, the Cows went on the offensive and nearly took the lead through Pete Briggs who rattled one against the post.
The Tree Fellas retaliated and, in the seventh minute, hit the front with Martin again scoring.
The Cows also went close in the final stages of the game, however couldn't find another equaliser with the Tree Fellas holding onto a 2-1 win.
