AUSTRALIA continued its domination of the Indoor Cricket World Cup in Brisbane, with Port Macquarie trio Sandie Bennett, Kerrie Brill and Kim Broderick all playing major roles.
The hosts have claimed every trophy on offer since the inception of the competition in 1995 and that record is still intact after the men gritted out an 11-run triumph over New Zealand in a low-scoring affair, and the women edged out South Africa by 24.
On top of that, the 16 and under boys crushed South Africa 159-73, the 19 and under boys hammered New Zealand 125-35 and the 19 and under girls pipped their Kiwi counterparts 115-71.
Bennett took on the national training and therapist duties and Brill coached the 19 and under girls’ side, of which Broderick was a member.
Not a bad effort for three people who live in a town that does not boast an indoor cricket centre.
Brill’s outfit suffered an early loss to New Zealand (81-57) then struck consecutive wins over England (101-89), South Africa (156-40), New Zealand (123-92), England (133-106), New Zealand (124-85) and South Africa (105-99).
Despite a defeat at the hands of England (98-95), the Australian youngsters bounced back to beat South Africa 150-2 to claim the number one position after the preliminary rounds.
Their tournament ended on a high when they accounted for New Zealand by 44 runs in the decider.
“It was a fantastic result,” Brill admitted.
“The team had a lot of work to do before the event.
“And, I was a bit worried at the start of the week, due to injuries and our interrupted preparation.
“But, to their credit, the girls put it in.
“Although we lost two matches along the way, we finished in top spot.
“The final was very close, and a lot more even than the scoreline suggests.”
Brill also extolled the virtues of fellow Port Macquarie representatives Broderick and Bennett.
“Kim did very well,” she explained.
“Unfortunately, an injury hampered her tournament but she stuck it out.
“In fact, leaving Kim out of the team for the final was the hardest decision I had to make.
“I have to praise the effort of Sandie and the other trainers too.
“They pulled it all together when it counted.”
